Carson Valley Health warmly welcomes Cindy Veal, APRN

Carson Valley Health warmly welcomes Cindy Veal, APRN to its Urology medical staff at Ironwood Specialty Care.

Veal, born and raised in Nevada, is joining Ironwood Specialty Care alongside James Cunningham, MD, Michele Ting, APRN, and Rhiannon Broersma, PA-C. Veal earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and later her Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Nevada, Reno.

After 15 years of experience with Nephrology, Veal found herself ready for something a little different. “Being in Nephrology for so many years, there is patient cross over. I have seen mutual Urology patients,” Veal said. “I’m excited about jumping into Urology.”

This is a seamless career move for Veal. “Nephrology is more about the function of the kidney. Urology includes kidney structure but focuses more on the structural part and how it connects with the bladder,” Veal said.

Veal has extensive experience in patient care. She has worked in hospitals and outpatient settings and has done acute care along with helping those with chronic conditions. While earning her master's degree she recovered open hearts and was a charge nurse at a cardiovascular intensive care unit.

“I really like to learn. No matter who you are, no one knows everything,” Veal said thinking back on takeaways from previous positions. “When I meet with patients, who also have cardiovascular issues for example, even though I'm not the person treating those issues I at least know what’s happening to the overall person. Understanding co-morbidities and not interfering with other treatments is important to me because I look at the whole and not just one part of the patients I see.”

Veal values having trust and a good rapport with her patients. “I like to include patients in their care by giving them options and making choices together instead of dictating treatment unilaterally,” Veal explained. “I want my patients to have the best quality of life they can.”

In addition to the people in the valley, Veal and her husband love the scenic area. In their free time they hike. Together they have 11 children, 10 grandchildren, and lots of dogs and cats.
